• World Issues in the Dominican Republic

Open to ALL Ontario High School Students!

Head to the Dominican Republic to study world issues and raise awareness about the need for social and environmental justice in our world. In addition to the CGW4U credit, this course will educate you on the realities of life in the Dominican Republic, build an understanding of the issues that surround that reality, and help you experience and appreciate another culture. Experience the curriculum through visits with inspiring community members and grassroots organizations who are working for change in their communities. In addition to the humble but comfortable community center residence, there will be two home stays throughout the trip – one in the coffee growing community in El Cacao, and the second in Bateye Las Pajas near San Pedro de Macoris where Canadians can build friendships, practice the Spanish language, and learn about the vibrant and welcoming Dominican culture from Dominicans themselves. Day trips will include visits to the Colonial Zone in historic Santo Domingo, La Caleta Marine National Park, FUNDEBMUNI – a women’s and children’s rights organization supporting youth and women, La Esperanza Coffee Cooperative to discover the joys and challenges of coffee production and the impact of Fair Trade certification, Bateye Las Pajas to understand the colonial legacy of sugar production and an organic farm project.  Come and see how education and strong, dedicated communities can make a positive difference in the world!
